Paolo Roversi is one of the biggest names in fashion photography. He’s brought the artform a very personal touch by using a wooden 20x25cm Deardorff camera with bellows, like some 19th-century portraitist, only with Polaroid.
For Secrets, Roversi chose photographs representing the essence of his work: portraits, nudes, self-portraits and fashion photography. His strongest influences in portraiture have been the Byzantine mosaics he knew during his childhood in Ravenna, along with certain Renaissance Madonnas and a kind of photography which could claim, during certain moments of its evolution, to have captured a piece of the subject’s soul as well as its image. In certain photographs in Secrets, Roversi appears like an uncertain shadow, almost a medium, either by his subject’s side, or as the subject himself.
